"The Power of People the Power of God"

Why not a Revolution in Afghanistan?
“The power of people the power of God”. Even though this term was frequently mentioned as one of the slogans by the communist regime in Afghanistan, the real application of this principal has been seen in Arab-Springs . People in that region have brought an end to the most notorious regimes who have ruled them regardless of their wills for decades. While collectively demonstrating and chanting for change, people, especially young men and women have failed their dictators and their loyal armies to rule them and to decide over their destinies anymore.

Unless their problems were to be addressed, which were only likely to be achieved with oust of these dictators from the power, there was no power and force that could stop these young people who because of the tyranny of their governments were badly affected, especially those who protested for their rights in Egyptian. They did whatever they could to get their voices heard and problems addressed. People in Egypt were really frustrated because of economic problems, corruption, lack of democratic principles and accountability, and acute unemployment. However, they have had security, necessary basic infrastructures and a functioning State which all, but so called democracy, are lacking in Afghanistan.

This month has been so far the bloodiest month in Afghanistan. Hundreds of civilian have been killed both by insurgents and the international forces. As basic responsibility of State, Afghan government has been failed to protect its citizen from the insurgents who have greatly endangered their lives.  They have rather saved themselves behind the heavy walls and commute in harmer vehicles to remain safe from any posing threat. They can’t be targeted by the insurgents in any chance, and therefore they won’t care how many civilians are being killed as long as they don’t loss anyone dear to themas. Of course, they won’t. Their families are outside of the country, living in Dubai, Europe and America, where they are enjoying safe and luxury lives.

Disparity on other hand among poor and rich has been getting enormously increased. The sooner they get rich, the saver they and their families become. So, whoever has not been able to get to this level, strives hard to reach there. Hence, such incentives among government officials itself have greatly contributed to overwhelming corruption.
Due to above mentioned failures; the competency of Afghan Government is largely undermined. In a country where the government is not capable of spending more than 20% of its developmental budget, how can citizens be confidant of progress and prosperity? It has been almost a month since the new-elected parliament has come into function but it is yet to elect its speaker. People who risked their lives to vote despite of being threatened by insurgents had some expectations from their representatives. They had thought that their wills would be represented by their representatives. But looking to the situation in the parliament, and the achievements of the last legislature, the Afghan people again were so optimistic in electing their representatives. Afghan Parliament doesn’t enjoy strong political parties nor there is political agendas based on what members of the parliament could get together to decide on most critical issues concerning to the interest of the nation and people as whole.
I don’t know why there is no reaction from the people, no resistances, no anger and frustration. Is this good to die by insurgents or to get a government who must do whatever it can to save its citizens. Looking to situation in our country, namely, insecurity, political instability, poor economic situation, incompetent officials, lack ownership, corruption, no transparency and accountability but I wonder why still people are so quiet and there is no movement and protest against those incapable officials. I believe, Afghan people need security and protection, economic progress and access to basic rights more than anything else. They are overwhelmed with their anger and frustration and this would be a good time to get out and stand against government in most peaceful manner. Afghan people need a fundamental change in their political system and have to get rid of corrupted officials. A state of emergency and transitional government should replace this current incompetent one. It all would be possible if the young generation who is loyal and committed for the people and country, and have the potential to serve their people in best possible way, disregard of their ethnicity get united and fight for their rights.

Bilateral Security Agreement: A supreme national interest and necessity of our time

By: Habib Sangar Afghanistan, taking into consideration its geopolitical location, for many centuries has been the center of focus for conquerors and superpowers. However, over the past 30 years and with the emergence of other regional actors (China, India, Iran, and Pakistan), the regional dynamics within the region that has had a direct impact over the situation in Afghanistan has been greatly shifted otherwise. Looking at the current situation of Afghanistan, its weak and corrupted administration, poorly equipped and fragile National Army and Police, as well as weak economy, the country has a long way towards being able to stand on its own feet and to defend its citizens against any kind of inside and outside threats. Unless there is a long-term guarantee and assurance that is more likely to be created with the long-term presence of the United States and its NATO allies on the ground, the likelihood of relapsing back into chaos is undeniable. The negotiation...

Strategic Partnership between India and Afghanistan

By: Habib Sangar Taking into account the importance of the friendship between Afghanistan and India, and the actual move that has been put in place with signing the Strategic Partnership (SP) today, it would be very suitable for the Afghan President, Hamid Karzai, to call this relationship as what the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Yusuf Raza Gilani, in a failed attempt of seeking support from the Chinese authorities, has termed their relationship as, “higher than mountains, deeper than oceans, stronger than steel and sweeter than honey”. Looking to the contents of this SP, Afghanistan as poor nation, dependent on international aid, facing a traditional enemy, Pakistan, who has always sought its interests in a destabilized, weak, and backward Afghanistan, is provided with an opportunity to ensure its long term security and stability as well as to accelerate its economic growth by utilizing all the potential resources that this wonderful piece of hearth personifies. However, as far ...

The dilemma of silence of Council of Religious Scholars

by : Habib Sangar Monterey, CA                   While the number of suicide attacks, in which most of the time innocent civilian get injured or killed, is increasing, the silence of the Council of Religious Scholars in response to this chronic   atrocity has remained Afghan people doubtful and concerned about the council’s leanings towards Taliban radical ideology. Past couple months have been the bloodiest months, with an unprecedented amount of violence and bloodshed. The recent acts of violence and terror have contributed to the anger and frustration of public to question the silence of this council.  One week after the religious clerics, in an unprecedented move, labeled one of the musical events of an Afghan singer, Shafiq Mureed, as an “immoral" act against Islamic values and ended up their bid in successfully canceling the event, in Kajaki village of Musa Qala district of unstable Helmand province, 17 people, ...
